Presentation Night Thanks

Hey Hawks!

Last week saw our annual Presentation Night being held at the Empire Theatre. So many talented young students walked up on stage to recieve their well-earned awards. A big thank you goes out to the Empire Theatre for letting us use your venue. An even bigger thank you goes to all the wonderful teachers who helped to organize the night. It ran quickly, smoothly and with professionalism.

Congratulations to all the award recipients.0H2A7867.JPG

UPDATE: Congratulations to our musicians on their Fanfare results

Symphonic Wind Ensemble – Gold
Stage Band – Silver
String Ensemble - Bronze

Hey Hawks! On Wednesday the 6th of June our musicians headed to the Rangeville Community Centre to compete in Fanfare. Three bands entered with hopes of winning. The Strings Ensemble was conducted by Mr Stockwell, the Symphonic Wind was conducted by Mr Gray and the Stage Band was conducted by Mr Will. They all sounded great, so fingers crossed that they head to state to compete in higher levels. Good job musos!

Bullying No Way and The World's Greatest Shave

Last Friday Harristown participated in The World's Greatest Shave raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation! Many students donated to the cause to get their hair coloured with hair chalk, while other brave students and teachers shaved their head! Wax strips were also available for the extremely brave teachers and senior students... resulting in some patchy looking legs!

Donations and participation were outstanding! Well done Hawks!
There were also many pledges signed for our National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Thanks to our Youth Support Coordinators for leading the way!

Interhouse Swimming Carnival

It was a cool and overcast (sometimes very rainy) day for the swimming carnival last week. This did not dampen the house spirit (especially for Bonda who took their “Where’s Wally” theme to extremes!). The cheering did not stop during the entire carnival, especially during the house swims. This gave the swimmers braving the conditions a great deal of encouragement. Teachers got involved in both the house swim and relays... and showed that age does not slow them down!
Although it was cold, the day was still enjoyable – especially for Balkuin who won the overall day – and for Dherwain who won the house spirit award.

Swinging with Symphonic Wind Ensemble

Hey Hawks!

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble are getting back into the swing of things with their first rehearsal this afternoon. We welcome our new conductor Mr Grey, our new woodwind teacher Ms Nichols and new brass and bass guitar teacher Mr Wills. On behalf of the music students we wish these teachers well and hope that they stay with us for the remainder of the year.

Popstars: The 90s Musical

Hey Hawks

Throughout the last few weeks, rehearsals for the “Popstars! The 90s Musical” have been underway.  Many people have been busy rehearsing, acting, singing and dancing for the musical which will be at the Empire theatre on the 18th and 19th of August.popstars-rehearsal.jpg
Ms Mullins, Mrs Hamilton and Mrs Krause have been busy choreographing dances for the musical which features classic 90’s songs such as “Larger than Life” (Backstreet Boys) and “Let’s Get popstars-rehearsal-drama.jpgLoud” (Jennifer Lopez) which are sure to have audience members singing along.    The dancers have been working really hard to perfect their dances.
Mrs Krause and Mr Macdonald have also been working with the acting cast to set out their positions, work on their lines and on their acting skills. Once again, the actors have been working extremely hard to perfect their lines and blocking.
popstars-boys.jpgMr Clarry and the back stage crew have been busy creating props, signs and scale models of the stage.  They are also working on the prompt copy of the script so they know about any changes to the script and where the props need to be located.popstars-girls.jpg
Mr. Macdonald, Mr Robinson, Mrs. Beare and the singing cast have been working with the band to perfect their singing and playing abilities.
The entire musical company have been hard at work to make this musical the best that Harristown has ever done. We hope to see you there!

acosta-study-tour.jpgAnother group of our friends from Japan arrived here at Harristown for their study tour in Australia. Sixteen Japanese students along with their teacher arrived last Tuesday and were greeted by a group of Harristown students willing to assist our buddies-for-japanese-visitors.jpginternational guests during their visit. While this is an opportunity for the Japanese students to improve their English and learn more about our Australian culture, it is also a great opportunity for Harristown students to meet people from different countries and learn a bit more about their culture.

Maths Competitions

There’s always something happening at Harristown, no matter what your interest is at school! During Term Two several Harristown teams attended the Toowoomba and District Maths Team challenge held at the St Ursula’s Salo Centre and participated in two written challenges – one a group challenge and one relay challenge, where only two members from each team were allowed to answer the question at a time. Although we didn’t win, all students had a fantastic day and tried their best.

Last week all Academic Academy and selected students participated in the Australia Mathematics Competition. This was a challenging written test, scored from Participation to Prize and many of our participating students last year did well. Finally, next week two teams of Year 7 and 8 students will represent the school at the QAMT Maths Challenge hosted by Centenary Heights State High School. Good luck to all the participating students.

Athletics Trials

Hey Hawks!

On Tuesday, the students of Harristown showed great participation and PRIDE during this year’s Athletics Day Trials. To earn points for their House and have chance of competing on Athletics Day in term 3, students participated in high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin, hurdles and various running events. Athletes or not, great effort and sportsmanship was shown throughout the day with many students giving each event their best go and encouraging their peers to do the same. Now that we have our Athletics Day competitors chosen, it’s time to wish good luck to all our athletes and get ready for the real deal in term 3.
