Popstars: The 90s Musical

Hey Hawks

Throughout the last few weeks, rehearsals for the “Popstars! The 90s Musical” have been underway.  Many people have been busy rehearsing, acting, singing and dancing for the musical which will be at the Empire theatre on the 18th and 19th of August.popstars-rehearsal.jpg
Ms Mullins, Mrs Hamilton and Mrs Krause have been busy choreographing dances for the musical which features classic 90’s songs such as “Larger than Life” (Backstreet Boys) and “Let’s Get popstars-rehearsal-drama.jpgLoud” (Jennifer Lopez) which are sure to have audience members singing along.    The dancers have been working really hard to perfect their dances.
Mrs Krause and Mr Macdonald have also been working with the acting cast to set out their positions, work on their lines and on their acting skills. Once again, the actors have been working extremely hard to perfect their lines and blocking.
popstars-boys.jpgMr Clarry and the back stage crew have been busy creating props, signs and scale models of the stage.  They are also working on the prompt copy of the script so they know about any changes to the script and where the props need to be located.popstars-girls.jpg
Mr. Macdonald, Mr Robinson, Mrs. Beare and the singing cast have been working with the band to perfect their singing and playing abilities.
The entire musical company have been hard at work to make this musical the best that Harristown has ever done. We hope to see you there!

Buddies

acosta-study-tour.jpgAnother group of our friends from Japan arrived here at Harristown for their study tour in Australia. Sixteen Japanese students along with their teacher arrived last Tuesday and were greeted by a group of Harristown students willing to assist our buddies-for-japanese-visitors.jpginternational guests during their visit. While this is an opportunity for the Japanese students to improve their English and learn more about our Australian culture, it is also a great opportunity for Harristown students to meet people from different countries and learn a bit more about their culture.

Maths Competitions

There’s always something happening at Harristown, no matter what your interest is at school! During Term Two several Harristown teams attended the Toowoomba and District Maths Team challenge held at the St Ursula’s Salo Centre and participated in two written challenges – one a group challenge and one relay challenge, where only two members from each team were allowed to answer the question at a time. Although we didn’t win, all students had a fantastic day and tried their best.

Last week all Academic Academy and selected students participated in the Australia Mathematics Competition. This was a challenging written test, scored from Participation to Prize and many of our participating students last year did well. Finally, next week two teams of Year 7 and 8 students will represent the school at the QAMT Maths Challenge hosted by Centenary Heights State High School. Good luck to all the participating students.

Athletics Trials

Hey Hawks!

On Tuesday, the students of Harristown showed great participation and PRIDE during this year’s Athletics Day Trials. To earn points for their House and have chance of competing on Athletics Day in term 3, students participated in high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin, hurdles and various running events. Athletes or not, great effort and sportsmanship was shown throughout the day with many students giving each event their best go and encouraging their peers to do the same. Now that we have our Athletics Day competitors chosen, it’s time to wish good luck to all our athletes and get ready for the real deal in term 3.

Harmony Week

Hey, Hawks!

Throughout week 8 our school has gone through many different activities in the celebration of Harmony week. On Wednesday, the Parade of Nations was held to showcase just a small section of our school’s diverse range of students of different cultures. Students from Afghanistan, Congo, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Tanzania came on stage dressed in their national clothing to showcase the diversity throughout our school community while our cultural captains Elijah and Maddie talked more about the importance of Harmony and acknowledging the many cultures. Our school captain, Emery Kavuala, also talked about his own experiences when coming to Australia and stories from the four years he has been here. Harmony week was a hit with students and hopefully, everyone had fun and have become more aware of accepting everyone no matter what their background.

Character Day Success

Hi Hawks,group-shot-web.jpg

As you may know, this week was Library Lovers Week! The library has been celebrating all week with many activities and opportunities for both staff and students to participate! Of course on Tuesday of this week it was also Valentines Day and the Library staff have made sure to use this as a consistent theme in their unique displays!incredibles-web.jpg All hawks were invited to come and participate in the displays or even go on a “blind date” with a book where students could borrow a mystery book and upon completion “rate their date”. I know I along with others, absolutely loved this idea!

The week ended with Friday free dress, where students were encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book or movie character and bring a gold coin donation to support future SRC projects. This was a great way to end the week and I’m sure everyone can agree that Library Lovers week for 2017 has been a huge success! anime-1-web.jpg
