Local Community Day

Sara Hales addresses Year 12 students

Thursday the 6th of February saw the return of Harristown State High School’s annual Local Community Day. This year a panel of five local speakers addressed senior English classes, giving an insight into issues and challenges for the city and residents of Toowoomba.

The panel consisted of Sara Hales, the Community Liaison Manager at Wellcamp Airport; John Gouldson, an elected councillor for the Toowoomba Regional Council; David Barton, who works for Mercy Family Services Toowoomba; Peter Rookas, the CEO at Toowoomba Hospital Foundation; and Wayne Beeston, the Regional School Sports Officer for Education Queensland.

The panel session was a great way to raise awareness amongst Year 12 students about some of the issues facing the city of Toowoomba.   Overall, the panel discussion was valuable for not only the students and staff who attended, but also for the guest speakers who had a rare opportunity to speak to senior students.

Peter Rookas explained, “One of the greatest joys that I get out of attending Local Community Day is being able to engage and talk to young people.”

Not only did the speakers take the time to speak one on one with Harristown State High School students, at a shared morning tea, but they also remained to answer

questions from students.

It was a great day for everyone involved and it left students feeling

more in touch and aware of developments in their local community.
