Australian Volleyball Schools Cup 2012

Harristown State High School nominated six teams to compete at the 29th Australian Volleyball Schools Cup this week in Melbourne. This event will produce a record number of 471 teams from 142 schools from across Australia, New Zealand and Japan and is the largest school sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere.

Harristown State High School has had 48 students and 6 teachers travel to Melbourne to compete. Harristown have been setting the bench mark for volleyball schools in Queensland for the past 2 decades and 2012 will be Harristown’s 22nd appearance at the championships.

Harristown’s volleyball coordinator and Volleyball Academy teacher Mr Terry Moore is extremely happy with the efforts and form of the teams this year. The players have been training all year and experienced some success already, winning two medals at the Queensland Volleyball Schools Cup. Our highest ranked team is the Open Boys Honours team who will be led by Queensland School Boy representative’s James Welsh, James Rahder and Australian setter Darren Auchter, the boys placed third in Queensland this year and fifth in Australia last year. For the girls, the Senior Girls teams (U17 and U16) will be hoping for a medal after gaining valuable experience during their recent USA volleyball tour in September. These girls gained a Bronze and Silver medal in Division 1 last year and will be looking to improve on that result at this year’s competition. It is looking like a great week for all involved.
