Hawk Writers Speculate

Students Write Up A Storm

Approximately 40 students from the HSHS Year 8 Accelerated Academy and primary schools in the region celebrated Literacy Week by participating in a three day Writers’ Workshop that took place in the HSHS Library.

This year’s genre was creative writing and students were lucky enough to be visited by published author, Christine Bongers  who shared techniques such as creating interesting characters. She also emphasised the importance of luring the reader into story, through engaging  beginnings and never using ‘once upon a time’ to begin a story.  Many of the sessions were hosted by English teachers, Miss Lisa Brown and Ms Donna Jones who focused  on adding detail and description and creating tension.

Students also participated in a fascinating  online Ipswich festival  session which featured poet ‘Ghost Boy’.

The purpose of the Writers’ Workshop was to provide an in-depth knowledge of writing techniques and encourage students to express themselves with creative writing. However, this also provided a great opportunity for primary students to be exposed to a high school environment. It was a great learning opportunity,” said a Valeview student. “I found it helpful  to have a taste of high school before I leave primary school,” said a Fairview Heights’ student.

A special thanks to all those who helped make this event possible. Without Christine Bongers, Lisa Brown, Donna Jones, The Good Guys, The Chronicle and McDonalds none of this would have happened. This experience was both useful and enjoyable. See the finished product under Related Links.
