Principal’s address

Mr Green spoke to the following topics:
  • Congratulations to students who participated in Presentation Night. The Honour boards now display the names of recipients. Gold leaders 2017 were announced and the tradition of changeover Assembly to present the new leaders was explained.
  • Eyes on your attendance: work on improving the results.
  • Lessons in Baseball: Mr Green shared the story from “Chicken soup for the Teenage Soul” He reminded students that doing what is right, fair and honourable is more important than winning or losing. It is a story about looking out for each other and the 2017 Gold leaders all spoke of looking for greater interaction with the junior year levels. He reminded students that we each have two eyes: one is to keep an eye out for ourselves and the other is to keep an eye out for those around us.


Jerome Robinson and Nick Isaacs spoke about the Clontarf trip to Northern Territory visiting Darwin, Kakadu National Park and places around Katherine. It was a great motivator for the students to stay the distance to Year 12 and develop closer bonds as a group. They shared a presentation of images from the trip.

Drama Production

Maggie and Becky, 2016 Drama Production Captains, spoke about the production of ‘Gate 38’, written by Brisbane-based playwright David Megarrity. The preparation with two casts, Qantas and Jetstar, were explained as was the reception at the four public performances and two community performances. The staff, cast and crew were applauded for their efforts.

Arts Showcase

Will and Becky spoke about the Arts Showcase with the new Arts prefects, Claire and Musa. The Arts Showcase 2016 is held in the Auditorium next Tuesday night from 7 – 9.15pm. Entry is $2 and a canteen will operate.

English Department News

ICAS English is an International competition which tests comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and knowledge of text structures using multiple choice questions. Students in the Academic Academy and interested Year 12 students were involved.  Congratulations to the following students:

Mr Parker spoke about the activities of the Harristown High school Debating Society and introduced the newest nine members selected. Mr Green presented the new members with their Society badges. Debates will be every three weeks from Term 2 next year.

Bard Stars – Harristown SHS Shakespeare Ensemble

Campbell Patterson and Kira Thompson spoke about the year’s activities for the Bard Stars, Harristown State High school’s Shakespeare Ensemble, and their preparation for the Queensland Youth Shake Fest – a state wide competition that allows students to participate in a range of categories from dance, costume design, film, photography and acting. The Ensemble entered two films, costume designs and photography in the Regional Finals, held at Downlands College on the 4th September. The films and costume designs qualified for the State Finals, held at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts on the 22nd October.
Over 5000 students across Queensland participated in the festival and three students made the top 154. All’s well that ends well. Congratulations to the following students:
  • Jacqui Palfi qualified for State Finals with her film Taming of the Shoe.
  • Campbell Patterson placed 3rd with the film Bardovision Song Contest 2016.
  • Kirra Thompson placed 2nd with costume designs for the character of Ophelia from Hamlet.

SEP Fishing Trip

Josh Mott spoke about the Bribie Island Fishing Competition in which 14 students competed. The students presented their trophies to Mr Green.

Winner: ‘Most fist caught by a girl’ – *name withheld
Team to catch the most fish overall: Vanessa Golsby, *name withheld, Shaylea Lucht, Rhiannon Ebert, Maddison Allwright

Gold Leader’s Initiative

Tom Lister introduced the Gold Leader Initiative, a lip-dub video which premiered at Presentation Night. The video is saved in G drive under Hawk Development for student use. The video uses copyrighted music so is unable to be shared via the internet (Education Licence C: APRA Licence).
