Year 7 visit Council Chambers

council chambers

12 students were chosen from Year 7 Geography to attend a special tour of Council Chambers and to meet with a local urban designer.  Students were given the opportunity to present their ideas for a redesign of Bell Street Mall to improve liveability and attract young people to the area.  The students invited to attend were chosen based on the creativity and application shown in their Geography assessment.

Students spent the morning touring the council chambers under the guidance of Counsellor Tait followed by a tour and presentation with the Urban Design team from Toowoomba Regional Council.  All students came home with gift bag from the council.  In the words of Roselyn Nihopara, the students found the excursion gave them an understanding “of how important” their input and design ideas are for the town’s future.  There will be further opportunities for students to participate in a youth conference later in the year as part of the council’s youth consultation programs to encourage young people to have a say in the future of Toowoomba.
